In the Gothsec/Astro-portfolio project, I recently focused on enhancing site performance by addressing font loading strategies. Web fonts are often a silent performance killer, introducing layout shifts and unnecessary external dependencies if not managed correctly.

The Performance Bottleneck

Previously, the site relied on external font delivery services. While convenient, this introduces an extra network round-trip and a potential single point of failure. If the external provider experiences latency, your critical rendering path is blocked until the fonts resolve.

Moving to Self-Hosting

To regain control, I shifted to a self-hosting approach for the site's typography. By bringing font assets into the local repository, we eliminate external DNS lookups and benefit from browser caching policies that are entirely within our control.

Implementation Strategy

To implement this in Astro, I moved the font files to the public/fonts directory and preloaded them in the document head. Preloading acts like reserving a seat at a restaurant—it tells the browser, "I'm definitely going to need this resource, so start downloading it immediately."
